Centers of Excellence

Scientists and institutes of the physics department take an active part in two centers of excellence.

Cluster of Excellence "3D Matter Made to Order" (3DMM2O)

The vision of the Cluster “3D Matter Made to Order” (3DMM2O) is to establish scalable digital 3D Additive Manufacturing reaching all the way from the molecular, via the nanometer and micrometer, to the macroscopic scale. This vision is nothing less than the ultimate digitization of 3D manufacturing and material processing. The approach transforms digital information into functional materials, devices, and systems “made to order”, at the push of a button by tabletop instruments. To create a powerful “technology push and pull”, 3DMM2O will treat molecular materials, technologies, and applications as indissolubly intertwined.

The 3DMM2O Cluster takes advantage of the complementary strengths of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Heidelberg University and builds on a long-standing strategic collaboration between the two universities, the Heidelberg Karlsruhe Research Partnership (HEiKA), as well as on several other coordinated collaborative projects. 3DMM2O involves principal investigators from chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, biophysics, biology, biomechanics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.

KIT Center for Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics (KCETA)

Within the KIT Center KCETA, experimental and theoretical research and teaching are performed at the interfaces of astronomy, astrophysics, elementary particle physics and cosmology. International large-scale projects for knowledge-oriented fundamental research form the basis and the connecting link of the various activities. KCETA is a unique platform for the study of the smallest components of matter and their interactions as well as of their role in the formation and evolution of the largest structures in the universe.

Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM)

The Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) is an interdisciplinary research institution of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in the field of disaster and risk management. It was founded in 2002 as a virtual institute between the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geoscience (GFZ) with the objective to advance the scientific understanding of hazards and risks and to develop solutions for the early detection and reduction of these risks. Additional knowledge in the fields of natural hazards, disasters, security, and risk research is generated for the benefit of the environment and society by active collaborations among different KIT institutes, divisions, and programs as well as cooperation with external organizations.
In 2012, CEDIM embarked on a new style of disaster research known as Forensic Disaster Analysis (FDA). In this new research program, an interdisciplinary team of CEDIM researchers investigate and analyze disasters and their impacts in near real-time. The results of these investigations are published as a series of reports available via the CEDIM web page. The current coordinator of CEDIM is PD Dr. Michael Kunz from the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-TRO) at KIT.
