An earthquake early warning system has been installed around Istanbul after the devastating 1999 Kocaelli event. Since then the Istanbul system became the focus of intensive research in designing new methods, optimizing its configuration, improving communication, and providing quantitative progosis. Warning times can be 20 seconds. More importantly the system can deliver rapid damage information after the event. The Geophysical Institute cooperates closely with Bosporus University.
